Telecoms workers? Yes please, Teccies? forget it

ICT workers looking for a new job should keep their eye on the telecoms sector.

The number of job vacancies in the industry rose sharply last month, according to new research.

Telecoms vacancies increased by 10 per cent month-on-month in September - the highest growth rate across the industry sectors monitored by the Monster Employment Index Europe.

It wasn't such a rosy picture for the technology industry, however: the number of UK IT jobs being advertised online dropped three per cent month-on-month in September - with vacancies down around 30 per cent year-on-year, according to Monster.

Other techie sectors are also suffering: engineering and R&D vacancies fell five per cent and six per cent respectively.

Across the board, online employment opportunities in the UK dipped by two per cent last month with hiring levels down a third on the same period a year ago.

Just eight of the 21 industry sectors monitored by the Index showed overall increases in online job availability in September, said Monster.

"Hiring among UK companies remains worryingly stagnant," said Hugo Sellert, head of economic research, at Monster Worldwide, in a statement. "As long as the macroeconomic outlook is uncertain, companies will remain reticent to hire workers, which in itself could slow the actual recovery."

However despite fewer job openings in the technology sector, he said there is "some cause for optimism in the broader business sector".
